Pincus Charles W. Day H. Joel Kelly Paul E. Corn Patricia W. Witten 6:00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. 7. Adjournment. STATEIV~-NT OF PURPOSE On June 30, 1993, the terms of Charles W. Day and Finn D. Pincus as Trustees of the Roanoke City School Board will expire. The purpose of this meeting is to interview five candidates for the upcoming vacancies. In an effort to bring you up-to-date on past actions, I would like to call your attention to the following information: (1) At regular meetings of the City Council held on January 25 and February 1, 1993, Council announced its intention to elect Trustees of the Roanoke City School Board for terms commencing July 1, 1993. (2) Advertisements were placed in the Roanoke Times and World-News inviting applications for the upcoming vacancies. Five applications were received in the City Clerk's Office prior to the deadline on Wednesday, March 10, 1993. (3) On March 15 at 12:30 p.m., Council held a reception with the candidates which was open to the public. (4) On March 22 at 2:00 p.m., Council, as a Committee of the Whole, reviewed and considered all applications. 2 (5) At the regular meeting of City Council on Monday, April 12, Council voted to interview all five applicants. The selection process provides, in part, that the number of candidates to be granted the interview will not exceed three times the number of positions available on the Roanoke City School Board, should there be so many candidates. (6) Those candidates who were to be accorded the public interview were notified by the City Clerk on April 15. (7) A notice was World-News a~endance published in the on Thursday, at a public hearing Roanoke Times and April 15 inviting to be conducted by Council on Monday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m., to receive 3 the views of citizens regarding appointment of School Board Trustees, and to submit proposed questions to the candidates by filing such written questions in the City Clerk's Office by 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 22. I am advised by theCity Clerk that no questions were submitted. Our selection process provides that Council will publicly interview each candidate separately and out of the presence and hearing of the other candidates. Section 9-21, Public interview of candidates, of the Code of the City of Roanoke (1979), as amended, provides, in part, that interviews of the candidates shall take place in an order deemed appropriate by City Council. The City Clerk has scheduled the following interviews for this evening: 4 6:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.- 8:00 p.m.- Finn D. Pincus Charles W. Day H. Joel Kelly Paul E. Corn Patricia W. Witten Each candidate will be given the opportunity to make an opening statement of not more than five minutes. Thereafter, Council may ask such questions, as Council, in its discretion, deems advisable. The Council will hold five interviews and each interview will consist of approximately 30 minutes.
