Welcome-Vice Mayor Joe Cobb welcomed participants to the meeting and invited Mayor Sherman Lea to also provide welcoming comments as to the purpose of the meeting. Participants Present: Shakira Williams, Natasha Saunders, Antwyne Calloway, Joshua Johnson, Rev. Tim Harvey, Taisha Steele, Dr. Mark Hamill, Evangeline Richie, Rabbi Kathy Cohen, Troy Gusler, Mary Ward, Nicole Ross, Courtney Penn, Rev. David Jones, Ryan Bell, Bishop Jamaal Jackson, Anthony West, Luke Priddy (from Senator John Edwards office), Vice Mayor Joe Cobb and Mayor Sherman Lea 2. Purpose for Meeting-Vice Mayor Cobb shared the purpose of the meeting to consider the creation of a task force to review current community practices regarding reduction of gun violence and to make recommendations to City Council to further reduce incidents of gun violence in our community. We believe this effort can lead to a community-based, comprehensive approach through prevention, intervention, education, public health and safety, and support to continue creating a healthier and safer city for all citizens to live and thrive. 3. Facilitated Conversation on Current Community Practices and Strategies to reduce gun violence in Roanoke. Participants introduced themselves, sharing briefly about their work in the city, current community practices and suggested strategies and areas of study for consideration in reducing gun violence in our community. A copy of the vision board created from the conversation is included with these minutes. 4. Next Steps-Recommendation to formally create a Task Force to Reduce Gun Violence for the City of Roanoke. By mutual consensus, the meeting participants recommended moving forward with formation of the Task Force to Reduce Gun Violence. A formal resolution will be drafted by the City Attorney for presentation at an upcoming City Council meeting. 5. Adjournment-Vice Mayor Cobb adjourned the meeting.
