HomeMy WebLinkAboutGVPC Minutes 06.08.21 Roanoke City Gun Violence Commission Meeting Minutes 06-08-21, at 545pm @ digital zoom mtg Topic (Agenda Item) Notes from Discussion Actions for Follow Up Person(s) Responsible Meeting started at 551pm • Meeting was held by zoom/digital platform Minutes • Changes or additions to minutes? • Tim motioned to accept them as is, Decca second, all in favor, motion carried Working groups updates • Working group(s) op-ed conversation by Tim Harvey –update on editorial • Tim Harvey- Safer Neighborhoods, 1. Project for summer is in conjunction with FEDUP on June 26th as a collaboration effort; for Roanoke Remembers 2. The mobile chalk board is being designed and thinking about fall for building and storage. 3. Planning for bridging the community gap event with TAP as the lead. • Decca Knight- Education, meeting(s) set the last Friday/monthly @ 9am, 1. Positive action curriculum with Family Service Roanoke Valley (30 students) with a survey at the end with mixed results. Discussion was had as to how to move forward. Youth advised that it wasn’t relevant to them during the survey. Discussion was had to use TOP program by Family Service instead, or combine both curriculum for the best desired results. The group wants to go back to ed comm. And create new goals and new curriculum for new facilitators. Group discussion was had about voting to enable FSRV to train and use funding for TOPS and creation of the lessons. Stacey motioned, Joe Cobb second, all in favor, motion carried. 2. Westside reading program, Kathy Cohen reported, piloted program with 25 students for reading. Idea was to improve reading outcomes for children reducing the school to prison pipeline. Challenge due to virtual learning. In most cases, there was a 3 to 4 month reading improvement. Plans are to expand the program to 100 children at a cost of $3,600.00 for books that the children will keep. Conversation was had as to continuation of the program or viability of having this continue over the summer programming due to children falling behind. Is it possible to continue this over the summer to enhance summer reading? Nicole Ross invited the group into summer programming at other locations. Trauma informed trainings, Decca Knight reported, hybrid presentations for those who want TIC training July 24 and July 27th 7- 9pm • Joe Cobb, Gang Violence and intervention- youth and gang violence community assessment, and grant results coming soon (grant applied for) Pathways being set up for ex-offenders (vetted) to give back and trusted relationships to be mentors and messengers for community youth and conflict resolution training. • Stacey Sheppard, Rapid Response- 1. Carilion being the catalyst for movement and protocol being created for a coordinated community response and meetings being held with trauma services and emergency services went well to get things accomplished Shakira Williams, Rapid Response- 2. Reported that FEDUP forms and paperwork is in process to get 501c3. Shakira is working to ensure the process is completed. The committee is working to finish the FEDUP incorporation. Stacey and Shakira mentioned on-going recruiting efforts for volunteers for rapid response. 3. Joe Cobb, RESET- reported on the good work that the RESET team was doing. Recent good news in the Roanoke Times today regarding the team. • Joe Cobb, Marketing and Communications- a RFP was developed for distribution to seek media partners for bids for marketing. It will be in phases, work/messaging/prevention/volunteers/PR campaign to gain visibility. Grants • Joe Cobb reported on a 25k grant and a 500k for work on prevention and intervention efforts on gang violence and gun violence Micro Grants • Angie O’Brien updated on micro grants as to who has finalized their grant forms. Unspent funding • There is $4,800.00 in non-allocated and unspent funding. A proposal was made to have an urban garden- discussion was had as to the objective of that and the work of the benefits as well as how to measure the outputs and inputs. • Discussion was had about a proposed project to bid on guns at estate sales and take them out of the market and add this into a project with the harm reduction coalition. Suggestion was made into getting more information about the project. • Joe Cobb moved that we approve up to 3k for urban farming with the understanding that we have clear partnerships and outcomes, Shakira second, majority in favor and motion was carried; one in abstention.
