HomeMy WebLinkAboutGVPC Minutes 02.21.23Roanoke City Gun Violence Commission/ Community Stakeholders Meeting Meeting Minutes 2/21/23, at 5:36 pm City Manager’s Conference Room Commissioners Present: Elliot Major, Tim Harvey, Decca Knight, Stacey Sheppard, Joe Cobb, Kathy Cohen Commissioners Absent: Nicole Ross, Eric Anderson, Shakira Williams Topic (Agenda Item) Notes from Discussion Roll Call See roll call above Quorum present Approval of Minutes from January 2023 Motion: Tim 2nd: Elliot Motion passes Old Business Youth Service Providers Collaborative City-wide Talent in the Star Show Request: Joe Cobb ● 180 contacts were made with youth ● 40 youth showed up for audition and represented all but 2 of the schools ● 23 acts selected but all will participate in some way including anti-violence workshops ● How many have experienced gun violence? All kids stated that they had ● A plan is being developed on how to extend this work beyond the show ○ Building peer support and mentoring relationships ○ Affirmation pledge will be included ● UWRV and Goodwill signed on with significant financial gifts ● Started out with a revised budget of $18, 192 ○ With the support of community partners the balance is down to $2, 992 ● Stacey noted that there was engagement with parents as well ○ Parents are thankful to have a safe place to bring their kids ○ Also seeing some good bonding in the groups already between the youth ● Will a videographer and photographer donate their time? ○ RVTV may be able to do it at a reduced cost? ○ VWCC has a program where students might be able to help ● Moving on with the MOU with TAP with utlizing ARPA funds ● Another update will be sent to youth providers Gun Violence Prevention Commission Marketing Campaign update: Mike Bento ● Continued to refine the campaign since we met in December 2022 ● Meeting with Carilion and Roanoke City Government Social Media ● Putting together a government and education plan ● Time to share the plan with City Council Members New Business Watershed Moment Presentation: Jane Gabrielle, Artist in Residence ● See reference of Jane’s PPT presentation ● Some alignment with the Operation Pinpoint and RESET? Joe states that City Council to hold meetings about the current curfew Roanoke Police Department Report Data: Joe ● Most recent police data shared at the first half of the planning retreat ● Aggravated assaults have leveled off for three years ● Homicides still trending up Tim talks about the importance of community rec centers RESET Update: Decca Knight ● See associated report Youth and Gang Violence Prevention Unit Update: Chris Roberts ● Case management referrals continue to increase ● Project pinpoint at Hanover and/or Hunt Ave ○ Waiting to hear what Chief Roman wants to concentrate on ● MOU in the works with schools to have credible messengers in the schools ● CSU clientele and getting adults to services ● This year the focus is the top down approach in working with community agencies in looking at policies that are no longer working ● Also working with adults who aren’t monitoring their children ● Looking into Denver Safe Haven project: church support after an incident Grant Updates Elliot met with Mrs. Lewis at TAP ● Done four of 18 events over a two year time span ● AACCI train the trainer in mindfulness, Boys to Men program ● Budget $6,000 spent of $40,000 at this time ● Quartely metric requested Stacey Children’s Trust ● 201 Community Members in Trauma Basics ● Other presentations and showings ● Expanded committee structures to Healthcare and Law Enforcement ● Spanish Trauma Basics created with CASA Latina ● Collaboration with Roanoke Prevention Alliance for advertising a resilient community Stacey Hillstreet Baptist ● Have spent about 25% of funds ● Mental Health Barbershop at Lucy Addison ○ Discuss life and get haircuts ● Some funds were supposed to be used at Washington Park Swimming Pool but that is being demolished so the proposal needs to be amended ● Anti-gun violence walk in November 2022 ● Challanges: marketing communications Stacey UWRV ● Strong Parents Strong Families Program ○ Slow getting started as a staff member left ○ Now recruiting young fathers in Landsdown for a 12 week curriculum ■ Envision case management services Decca Humble Hustle ● Humble Hikes, Pretty Humble, and The Collective reports Reminder from Joe that the commissioners role is to build relationships with the grantee organizations ● Reporting from different agencies varies Joe would like us to strategically think about helping smaller organizations with the social media presence and marketing ● Elliot suggests that marketing be a part of the RFP Announcements Gun Violence Prevention Commission Meeting, Tuesday, March. 21st, 2023 Adjournment 6:50 adjourn
